Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the effects of lime (CaCO3) fertilization on dry matter yields and chemical composition of two legumes: Desmodium (Desmodium ovalifolium) and Kudzú (Pueraria phaseoloides). Seven different fertilization levels were compared (0, 50, 250, 500, 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 kg/ha). Lime fertilization resulted in significant increases in dry matter yields of the two legumes. However, it did not affect crude protein, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium contents of the forages. Kudzu exhibited significantly higher protein and potassium contents than Desmodium. Input-output relationship were established, and the best net incomes were obtained with the use of 3,125 and 3,200 kg of lime/ha for Desmodium and Kudzu, respectively.
