ARBOREAL TERMITE NESTS ASSOCIATED WITH CASHEW (Anacardium occidentale) IN RÍO HATO, COCLÉ, PANAMA
Abstract
The cashew (Anacardium occidentale) constitutes one of the fruit trees with the greatest potential for development in Panama, being frequently used in reforestation projects, in addition to generating foreign exchange for the commercialization of its double product. The objectives of this study were to identify the termite species and to evaluate variables related to arboreal termite nest associated with cashew tree in Panama. The study was developed in a cashew plantation in Río Hato, Coclé, Panama, where 10 out of 88 trees were sampled. The evaluated variables included measures associated with cashew trees and measures associated with termite nests, including a correlation matrix and a principal component analysis. Termite specimens were sampled and brought to laboratory conditions for specie identification. The termites present were identified as Nasutitermes corniger (Motschulsky) (Isoptera: Termitidae). The results of this study indicated that there are two groups of defined variables, those associated with the termite nest and those associated with the cashew tree. These elements constitute the basis for integrated management programs for termite nest in cashew.
