Abstract

The red-banded thrips, Selenothripsrubrocinctus (Giard) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae: Panchaetothripinae), is known as a polyphagous species among several fruit species, including cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) (Sapindales: Anacardiaceae). The objective of the work was to determine the taxonomic characters, damage, and correlation of temperature and precipitation with the population fluctuation of S. rubrocinctus in a cashew plantation in Río Hato, Panama. The study was conducted during 12 months, considering the dry and rainy periods of the area. Monthly samplings were carried out from July 2021 to June 2022 in the leaves of cashew trees. With the captured thrips, microscope slides were made to describe the taxonomic characteristics and the damage of S. rubrocinctus. The population fluctuation of adults and immatures presented the highest population peak in the month of February 2022, corresponding to the highest population density recorded in the dry period. There is a significant negative correlation between thrips populations and rainfall. In the case of temperature, despite showing a moderate positive correlation, it was not significant. This study constitutes a contribution to the knowledge of damage and population fluctuation of this phytophagous species in Panama.
