Abstract

The main objective was to evaluate the heat tolerance of Wagyu-Brahman bovines grazing under the humid tropic conditions. Data correspond to the 2008-2014 period. Dependent variables were: heat load index (HLI), respiration rate (FR), rectal temperature (TR) and integumentary temperature (TS). For each taken observation it was calculated the temperature-humidity index (ITH) with the ambient temperature (Tamb) and relative humidity (HR) were determined. Racial groups (GR) were: WG25, WG50, WG75 and WGF1. Season of the year (EP) at the sampling moment was classified into dry season (ESC) and rainy season (ELL). Data were analyzed by a generalized linear nested model. Regression analyses were performed to study the ITH tendency with Tamb and HR, as well as the studied variables with ITH. Effects of EP an GR(EP) were not significant (P>0.05) on the dependent variables. Correlations with ITH on WGF1 were: 0.218 (HLI), 0.527 (FR), 0.348 (TR), and 0.309 (TS) and all significant (P<0.001). In ELL, higher values of HLI (95.07), FR (51.29 breaths/min) and TR (39.80° C) were found on WG50, but higher values of HLI (97.34), FR (49.50 breaths/min) and TR (40.50° C) were found on WG25. Differences in HLI, FR, TR and TS values among GR(EP) were not significant (P<0.05). According to the HLI, the EEG-CMO-IDIAP is on very hot condition (94.6) and to the THI in a danger zone (82.6). Based on TR and FR all evaluated GR presented moderate heat tolerance.
